WhatsApp announced that iPhone owners can now stream messages, photos, and videos to select Android smartphones to make it easier to switch between platforms.
There are some notable limitations to this new freedom. WhatsApp says that current data transfer is only possible from iPhone to Samsung devices running Android 10 or higher and requires smartphones to be connected via USB-C-to-Lightning cable.
WhatsApp says the feature “will soon be available on more Android devices”. But it still looks like a one-way street; The company does not provide advice to owners of Android smartphones who wish to transfer their chat history to an iPhone using a similar process.
The company indicated that this feature would allow data transmission in both directions. “This is just the start,” says WhatsApp. “We hope that this option will be available so that more people can switch between the platforms of their choice and chat securely with them.”
